Convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence, a quiet banker, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), tries to survive prison by clinging to hope — and befriending a fellow lifer named Red (Morgan Freeman). When it was released in 1994, The Shawshank Redemption earned multiple award nominations. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Robbins and Freeman were also both nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1995.
In 1999, film critic Roger Ebert listed Shawshank on his list of “The Great Movies,” and it was included on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years...100 Cheers” (2006) list charting inspiring films. Contemporary review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an 89% approval rating from 146 critics.
In 2015, the film was selected by the United States Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
