Comedy/Drama ‧ PG ‧ 1h 57m ‧ 1989
On Wednesday, September 16, at 7:00 pm, the Odeon Theater’s free Classic Movie Night pays tribute to Dolly Parton with a showing of “Steel Magnolias,” the beloved 1989 comedy drama starring Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, and Julia Roberts. The film pivots around the lively Truvy Jones' Louisiana beauty parlour, where a tightly-knit band of women celebrate friendship, hope, and happiness and confront grief, loss, and heartaches with what they do best: gossiping and sharing. Parton, who plays Truvy, is the emotional anchor of the story and her salon serves as a sanctuary for the community of women. “She’s no different from me at all,” Parton told the Today show in 1989, referring to her character. Watching the movie again is the ultimate reminder of the joy Parton brought into our lives.
